The Kate Cory was built in 1856 in Westport, Massachusetts. Registered at 32 tons, she was 75 feet in length. Originally rigged as a schooner, she was converted to a brig in 1858. This rig afforded steadier motion in heavy seas and while “cutting-in” whales.
After five voyages she was captured by the C.S.S. Alabama and burned off the coast of Brazil in 1863.
The model is 3/16 inch scale and represents a small two-masted schooner used early in the Atlantic whaling industry.
Cherry wood case. Dimensions 10” W x 29” L x 23” H.
